Weight loss concerns a great many persons. As you may know, the press regularly runs stories about the epidemic of obesity which has overtaken Americans. 64 percent of Americans are overweight or worse, needing to lose weight! As a society, we worry about the considerable health care costs associated with an overweight population. Excessive weight however is a very personal problem associated with very real personal pain. Yes, excess fat pounds contribute to painful medical problems such as diabetes type II, heart problems, wear and tear of hip and knee joints, lower back pain, etc. As important, however, are the emotional pains related to being overweight-- the daily pain of low self-esteem and low self-confidence, of feeling unattractive and unlovable.

As you know, there are many weight loss programs including Atkins, Weight Watchers, Jenny Craig, etc. Did you know that hypnosis is a very effective method of weight loss? For example, in January 2004, Dateline NBC aired a program wherein they followed 6 persons using six different methods of dieting over 6 months. My Weight Loss Program is Not a Diet, it is a Lifestyle
My weight loss program is NOT a diet program. As you know, weight lost by dieting typically is put back on within two years. Moreover the entire tone of approaching weight loss through dieting is one of deprivation. Instead, my lose weight program focuses upon your developing a health lifestyle and healthy relationship to food that not only leads to weight loss, but also sustains your continued health long after you've attained your ideal weight goal. I don't ask you to deprive yourself of the legitimate pleasures of eating. Instead, I ask that you add to your life the pleasures of health, fitness, energy, pride, and self-esteem.
My Portland Hypnosis Weight Loss Program
Session 1: Our first session is two hours long. It's long, because there's alot that we do. First I guide you through a 45-minute interview to obtain a detailed understanding of your relationship to food. As you know, our relationship to food is complex. There can be so many different reasons as to why we are overweight: emotional support, food allergies, family history, sexual abuse, stress, are just a few of the many factors that contribute to weight problems. How can our weight loss work be effective without understanding your unique relationship to food? (It's interesting to note that most hypnotherapists and dietary programs do not make any efforts to understand the unique combination of factors that contribute to your unique weight problem).
During our interview, we will specify your overall weight loss goal. We'll also specify an interim lose weight goal for your first month. Typically this will be 8 pounds less than your starting weight. Of course my clients are eager to lose even more week, but a safe and realistic goal is to lose 8 pounds a month. Some clients do lose more, sometimes significantly more, in a month, but that is not typical. Your monthly weight loss goal provides you a realistic interim goal whose acievement helps to motivate your continuing success and progress towards your overall lose weight goal.
I also assign you food journal worksheets with which you will track the food that you eat over the the time that we work together. For some clients, filling out the chart is an eye-opener helping them to understand some the eating behaviors which have contributed to their weight problems. For others, keeping a journal keeps their focus upon their goal to become more healthy, more fulfilled.
After my interviewing you, I then discuss hypnosis with you. I explain hypnosis to your satisfaction, answering any questions that you may have about hypnosis. I'll also explain what you can look forward to during your first hypnosis experience. I want to make sure that you feel totally comfortable with hypnosis. After all, for most of us, hypnosis is a new experience.
After answering all of your questions, I'll hypnotize you, and we then will begin your weight loss program. Your hypnosis will be recorded on a CD so that you can listen daily to your CD between sessions in the comfort of your own home. This will give you a daily weight loss hypnosis session which will compound the effectiveness of the work that we do in person.
Sessions 2 and 3: The second and third sessions are 50-minute long, and are scheduled at weekly intervals after the first session. In each session, we track your progress, and note areas with which you may want to have a special focus applied during the hypnosis work. This information and the information gleaned from your interview will help me to customize my hypnotic suggestions to your individual needs. I focus especially on developing your positive lifestyle behaviors in relation to food and exercise. The fact that my approach is tailored or customized to you as an individual significantly enhances your success.
Bi-Weekly Reinforcement and Support Sessions: Most of my clients want to lose more than 8 pounds of weight (a realistic monthly goal). After the third weekly session, we then meet every other week until you achieve your overall weight loss goal. Each new month we specify a new monthly weight loss goal. Of course in each of these sessions, we do hypnosis, and I provide you a CD recording of our work for you to listen to on a daily basis.
You also are taught self-hypnosis so you can become your own hypnotist! The National Institute of Health has determined that hypnosis is one of nine factors which contribute to keeping weight loss off for more than 2 years. To enable you to use hypnosis to support your continuing success with weight loss after we stop working together, I teach you self-hypnosis so that you can become your own hypnotist. This training includes not only learning self-hypnosis techniques, but also training in the proper crafting of effective suggestions which will enable you to stay healthy.

Results? Here are some examples of the kinds of progress made by my weight loss clients:
- Middle-aged lady in 50s: As of Session 2, lost 5 lbs., Session 3: 0 lbs., Session 4: another 4 lbs., Session 5: Another 7 lbs. Her boss noticed her weight loss, and he became a client.
- Middle-aged man in 50s: As of Session 2, 12 lbs (I have no idea how or why this man lost 12 lbs in one week.. most likely some significant water loss). I don't attribute it entirely to hypnosis. Session 3: 3 lbs., Session 4: another 2 lbs., Session 5: another 6 lbs.
- Another middle-aged woman in 50s: As of Session 2, lost 5 lbs., Session 3: 5 lbs., Session 4: another 2 lbs., Session 5: Another 8lbs. Her personal trainer noticed the difference, and requested business cards for referrals.
- Another middle-aged man in 50s: As of Session 2, lost 0 lbs. (didn't weigh himself), Session 3: 0lbs. (didn't weigh himself),, Session 4: 22 lbs. (from his presumed start), Session 5: Another 9lbs.
My Hypnosis Weight Loss Program is Compatible with Other Weight Loss Programs
Sometimes clients who want to lose weight seek me out to enhance their work with other weight loss programs. For example, a woman participating in Weight Watchers might be curious about how hypnosis might support her efforts. Understandably, she might be concerned about whether hypnosis will detract in any way from her existing dietary efforts. Can hypnosis really enhance her weight loss? Yes. The hypnosis program that I offer does complement other lose weight programs. It certainly can enhance and speed up your progress.
